While most people do not know or appreciate the importance of soil health, we literally live and breathe it! FGS Organics have been advocates for soil health for decades. With a farming heritage, we understand the importance of nutrient rich soil for improved crop growth and specialise in the supply and application of natural fertiliser directly onto the land.
We have also long been aware of the positive environmental implications of soil health. It’s encouraging to see that an increasing number of scientists, celebrities, global organisations and businesses are also seeing the enormous potential of this rather overlooked resource in the fight against climate change. The key to saving our planet is just beneath our feet…
Like us, the United Nations have been advocates of soil health for many years and dedicated 5th December every year to World Soil Day. The aim of the United Nations World Soil Day is to raise awareness of soil health, encourage positive change and ultimately save the planet. The theme for World Soil Day this year is: “keep soil alive, protect soil biodiversity” and the message has never been so important.
While many of us are distracted by the Covid-19 pandemic, there is a much bigger threat at large: climate change. However, many scientists are now convinced that soil health is key to potentially reversing the effects of climate change and restoring the health of the planet.
Why Is Soil Health So Important?
- Healthy soil leads to healthy plants, tress and crops (and healthy people)
- Healthy plants and trees grow bigger and stronger
- Bigger and stronger plants and trees can capture more carbon
- A greater amount of carbon is removed from the atmosphere and stored safely in roots in the soil
- Reduced carbon in the atmosphere will restore the balance of gases on earth and the planet can start to heal
How to Support UN World Soil Day 2020
There are a number of ways to support World Soil Day both at home and within our businesses. Consider:
- Planting: it might sound elementary but it’s vitally important that we plant more, particularly trees. According to National Geographic, more than half of Earth’s rainforests have already been destroyed – more trees are needed globally to recapture the carbon released into the atmosphere due to deforestation
- Encourage natural self-managing eco-systems: you could sow a wild flower patch in your garden or fields – these are great for encouraging soil biodiversity and wildlife including bees who we need to pollinate the plants
- Switch from artificial fertiliser to nutrient rich biofertiliser: Digestate is rich in natural nutrients, enhances soil health and produces superior crops. We specialise in supplying biofertiliser and can apply this directly onto your soil for the best possible results
- Become a soil health advocate: share information about this subject on your social media, speak to others about the importance of soil health, educate your staff on the subject and ask your MP if they are aware of the environmental benefits of soil health so they can make informed decisions in government
- Reduce, reuse, recycle: on a small scale, household food waste can be composted in a garden compost bin and used to give your own garden an organic fertiliser boost. On a larger scale, commercial and farm food waste can be collected by our sister company VeriGreen and used to create green energy and biofertilier. Waste wood can be upcycled or turned into woodchip for biomass. Metal, glass, cardboard and plastic can be recycled and even household waste can be incinerated to produce energy. As part of the Heathcote Holdings group of companies, we can offer a comprehensive waste management system to our clients. We can help reduce your carbon emissions and send zero-to-landfill to minimise the environmental impact of your business so you can be part of the solution
