We are delighted to announce our continued collaboration with Ovenden Allworks and Thanet District Council this year to clear the beaches of seaweed.
With approval from the Environment Agency, all harvested seaweed will be stockpiled on a local farm to be spread later in the year. This seaweed will serve as a valuable organic fertiliser, rich in nutrients and organic matter, to promote increased yield and improved health in the forthcoming crops.
This practice enriches the soil and significantly reduces the need for environmentally harmful, carbon-intensive synthetic alternatives. By using seaweed as fertiliser, we can reduce our reliance on chemical fertilisers, thereby lowering our carbon footprint and contributing to more sustainable farming practices. Furthermore, the nutrients found in seaweed can enhance soil structure and water retention, leading to healthier and more resilient crops.
In addition to its agricultural benefits, clearing the seaweed will boost the local economy in Thanet. By removing large quantities of seaweed, the visual appeal of each beach is enhanced, making them more attractive to visitors, both local and from further afield. Also, the seaweed has an unpleasant smell which can deter visitors, so removing it will make the coastline a more pleasant place for everyone. Cleaner, more inviting beaches can lead to increased tourism, which supports local businesses, creates jobs, and fosters a vibrant community.
